Reflection

 

Nearing the end of the project, I felt as though Bubble Boy really started coming together as a semi-professional phone application. My confidence using Unity and problem solving in the program dramatically increased over the duration of the project. I was able to finally grasp a better understanding of events and state machines, and re-work them until I got the desired effect. Though I still have a lot to learn, I am now prepared to take even bigger risks with my work despite my lack of software experience.

 

There is so much I would do differently if I had the chance to re-start the project from the beginning. I have trouble pacing myself during projects where I have almost no clue what I am doing. Unity was a completely new software platform for me, and I had a very hard time gauging how long certain tasks would take me to complete. I think I did a reasonably decent job in terms of the sequence in which I finished certain portions of the game, but I felt as though I rushed myself to compensate for potential problems in the future. If I had the opportunity to do the project over with the knowledge I have now: I would be able to create a more accurate timeline, and therefore give each individual aspect of the game the right amount of work and attention. I regretted not doing as much research as some of my other classmates, and I think my project could have benefited from extra background information. I spent a lot of time on forums and YouTube in an attempt to solve my problems, but I could have spent much more time studying other augmented reality games.

 

With the support from my professor and classmates I achieved more than I ever thought I could by myself. The ambitions of everyone in the studio inspired me to go beyond what I thought I was capable of. I used this project as an opportunity to shove myself outside of my comfort zone, and I think I was successful in doing so. I had the opportunity to combine Adobe illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Maya, Unity, and Xcode all in one project, and a finished augmented reality phone application came out the other end. I am immensely proud of the work I did on this project, and now I am inspired to push my boundaries even further.
